Solidarity — a Rwandan value

Gutabara.Our tradition.

Gutabara means coming to the aid of someone in need or struck by misfortune. Inspired by the agaseke, a symbol of solidarity and generosity in Rwandan tradition, our fund turns this living value into practical support for families in the Rwandan diaspora in Switzerland when they lose a loved one.

Community mutual-aid project — amounts remain indicative and depend on available funds.

The project

Move from emergency support to solidarity organised in advance

Today

A collection begins after the death

Friends quickly turn to the community, often through messaging apps, while the family is already going through a difficult time.

  • Generous but unpredictable mobilisation
  • Amounts and responsibilities are not clearly structured
  • Additional burden on families
Tomorrow with the Gutabara Solidarity Fund

Solidarity is organised

Regular contributions build a shared reserve and enable a quicker, clearer, and fairer response.

  • Rules known before the event
  • Contribution adapted to the profile
  • Traceable decisions and payments
How it works

A simple and understandable mechanism

01

Declare the family circle

The member lists the people to be covered: partner, husband and wife, children, parents, and brothers or sisters.

02

Calculate a fair contribution

Half of the risk is pooled, while the other half depends on the declared profile, within a defined contribution range.

03

Update when life changes

A death, a new child, or the addition of a relative triggers a new calculation based on the updated profile.

04

Provide support quickly

In the event of a death, the association organises prompt support according to the rules and available funds.

CHF 10–30defined monthly contribution range
50 / 50pooled and individualised risk
3 / 6 monthsprogressive eligibility for support
CHF 3’000basic support — CHF 4’500 in total for shared coverage
The simulator

Estimate a monthly contribution

The calculation combines a common share for all members with a share linked to the people declared. The result is rounded up to the next franc.

This non-binding simulator is intended for discussion. The parameters must be validated using actual profiles and legal advice before launch.

Next steps

These documents form the launch file. They must be discussed, drafted, and then legally reviewed.

Project rollout

Turn the idea into an operational project

The project already has a financial model, a simulator, and operating rules to develop further. The next step is to secure its launch.

Legal framework

Validate the articles, regulations, and legal classification of the mechanism before collecting any contributions.

Seed funding

Build an indicative reserve of CHF 15’000 and finance the initial implementation.

Governance and oversight

Establish transparent decision-making, dual approval, and accountability rules.

Sustainable infrastructure

Set up payments, accounting, and the future secure member area.

Governance

Project committee

Essential questions

What you need to know at this stage

Is Gutabara an insurance scheme?

Clearly NO. The project is designed as community mutual aid with discretionary support, without an acquired right or guaranteed amount. Written legal advice is still required before contributions are collected.

What happens if several members cover the same relative?

Total support is capped at CHF 4’500 for the same death. It is not CHF 3’000 per member, and a third member does not increase the amount.

Can the contribution change?

Yes. After a death, addition, or family change is reported, the profile is updated and the contribution is recalculated within the CHF 10 to CHF 30 range.

When does full support become available?

The model provides for progressive eligibility: no support before three months, limited support from three to six months, and full support once six complete months have elapsed. Each person added has their own entry date.

Are contributions refunded?

No. Contributions already paid are not refunded, including when a member leaves the association, because they finance collective solidarity and costs already incurred.
